Age Word Problems – YourTeacher.com – Algebra Help

For a complete lesson on age word problems, go to www.yourteacher.com – 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to solve “age” word problems, such as the following. Bret is 3 times as old as Laura. In 5 years, Bret will be twice as old as Laura. Find their ages now. Note that this problem requires a chart to organize the information. The rows of the chart can be labeled as Laura and Bret, and the columns of the chart can be labeled as “age now” and “age in 5 years”. The chart is then used to set up the equation.

  4. Why is solving the equation not part of the lesson ?

  5. 3x+12=2(x+12)-1
    3x+12=2X+24-1
    3x+12=2x+23
    3x=2x+23-12
    3x=2x+11
    3x-2x=11
    x=11
    Here we go!

  6. what the hell! how did he solve the
    3x+12= 2(x+12)-1

  7. lol this is easy lol.. i learned this like over 9000 years ago lol

  8. oh shit neva mind. i wrote teh problem wrong. x-X

  9. @bigdaire – when u solve teh equation, u gets 11.

  10. thnks!!

  11. Where did he get 11 from the equation?

  12. Ok, my apologies. However, all I was trying to get across the board was the fact that sometimes, you should work it out if they don’t. But you will get it. My example is just a continuation of what he was supposed to do. Good luck with your career and God bless. Again, I am sorry.

  13. Im sorry for my negative comments, and I’ll remove them. I never should’ve said them. Im not a gang banger nor am I in the photo with Cripes, Im just a guy trying to pass my GED test this Tues. I posted to this video because I was frustrated cause I didn’t get it, and wished he went more into details. I do have a good job, but if I don’t pass by Nov 31st It’s gone. I passed everything else but the math by10 pts. if I was u I’ll stay in school. I do admit ur commit hurt my feelings a little bit.

  14. Lmfao. Dude, I live in The Bahamas. I have no idea who this guy is. And I never claimed I was smart. Nevertheless, learning is an experience that you will tackle in your everyday life…you can never know everything. In fact, I am in College and my lecturer posted this ad on our Math site. If you would look at the pattern of their videos, you would see that they do not have long videos. In addition, everyone else said that he did a good job. If you would pay attention(if u got money) u’d get it

  15. 3x=12 = 2(x+12) – 1 CORRECTION!
    3x + 12 =)

  16. You idiot…
    3x=12 = 2(x+12) – 1
    3x + 12 = 2x + 24 – 1
    3x – 2x = 24 – 12 – 1
    x = 11

    Therefore

    The son’s age will be 23 in 12 years and the mother’s age will be 45. Now, if you double the son’s age like the problem said, you would get 46. And they said that the mother’s age will be 1 less than that. So, the mother will be the 33 + the 12 which gives you 45. Now, 46 – 45 is what? 1 right? Dumbass. Try to actually work the problem before you make comments. Nice job guys. <3<3<3
