What are some freeware alternatives to Maple, Matlab, and Mathematica besides Scilab?

I am an undergraduate Physics researcher, and I need to find an affordable alternative to Maple, Matlab, or Mathematica. I have already found Scilab, but I wanted to know if there are any other options available. Both my research adviser and I use Macs, so something that runs on Unix or Mac (ideally) is preferred.

  1. I don’t think there’s a freeware alternative that even comes close to the power and capability of the commercial packages. I wish there were. $2500 for Mathematica 6 is a lot of money.

  2. Octave
